My name is Claude and I am the artistic director at First Impressions Theatre. I have been with the company for nine seasons. Just a short stint compared to Michael and Eileen Smith who have been bringing you live theatre for forty-two seasons!!
Eileen asked me today about SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, our next production...She said, "how do I get everyone to come to this show, it's hard to explain what it is, and I really want people to see it."
So here I am invading your spare time so Eileen will leave me alone, but mostly because I too really want you to see the show. It is a really, really good show!
Why, you ask...
Firstly, it follows Claude's Playlist Rule of "ALL BANGERS ALL THE TIME." There is not a single song that does not stand out all on its own as excellent.
But here is the real deal...
There is some serious crap going on in the world right now, some decade-defining crap and you know what I am talking about...
I got into doing theatre because I believe in the way it can make us all come together and celebrate our humanity and most often our complete and total imperfections in a way that can make us all proud to be...human. It is the reason for theatre in general. From prehistoric people telling stories around the fire, to the biggest techno-spectacle on Broadway, theatre is about telling stories, stories that unite us, give us shelter when the world is truly f@#&* up and that shows us our commonality. It is significant that at the end of the title song, the line "You'll be fine" has been changed to "We'll be fine." It is about community. It is about shared experience. And it is about the fact that as humans we are all forced to go on new journeys, into new worlds, over and over again throughout our lives. As Stephen Sondheim wrote in Into the Woods, "Into the woods we go again. We have to, every now and then..."
So let your hair down, trust us with 90 minutes of your precious time and with a small, powerhouse cast and a driving, exquisitely crafted score that runs the gamut of today's popular music. It's a contemporary collection of songs weaving characters and history together, illuminating the timelessness of self-discovery, it speaks to a world we now inhabit (RIGHT NOW) and gives us hope for a future that will be new and bright... it really, really will!
Songs for a New World will make you happy you came, but more importantly it will make you happy to be human.
Directed by Tiffany Bishop; music director Gordon Roberts.
Sincerely,
Claude André Giroux
