i carry your heart with me is an original play about playwright Michelle Martin’s beloved mother, Cecile Martin, who passed away from breast cancer in 1980 when she was 36 years old. Michelle was 12. Cecile was a mother of five, a loving wife, the star of the local Barrhead Community Theatre, and a vibrant force of nature. Follow the true story of Michelle as she recounts her splendid time on stage with her mother, relives the painful memory of her death, and finds joy and acceptance with her siblings and father as they bond and become a new tribe.

The centrepiece of the play is a voice recording of a speech Cecile Martin gave to oncologists at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton when she was receiving chemotherapy treatments in 1979. It is a fierce, heartbreaking, charming tour de force – a call to action to medical professionals to treat their patients with more dignity and humanity, as well as a searing personal account of a young mother living with terminal cancer.

With the strength of her mother’s voice to guide her, Michelle embarks on the journey of a lifetime...to heal her heart and bring her passion project to life. “Do the thing you can’t live without doing.”
