The Birds & the BeesComes to the Kay Meek Arts Centre Oct. 4 & 5

The Birds & the Bees playwright Mark Crawford's first play, Stag and Doe, premiered in 2014. His second play, Bed & Breakfast, premiered in 2015, and played at the Arts Club’s Granville Island Stage in its 2018–2019 season. In 2016, The Birds & the Bees premiered at the Blyth Festival, and quickly became one of the most-produced Canadian plays of the decade with a dozen professional productions to date.

The Birds & the Bees follows Sarah (Anges Tong), a turkey farmer, who has split up with her husband and moved in with her mom, Gail (Nancy Kerr), a beekeeper. Add in Earl (Gerry Mackay), the flirty neighbour, and Ben (Riley Hardwick), an eager young graduate student, and you have the perfect breeding ground for unlikel yattractions. Set in adjoining bedrooms, The Birds & the Beesis a Canadian comedy about love, lust, beekeeping, and the artificial insemination of turkeys.

Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran says, “I love this big-hearted, silly, modern—and progressive—sex farce, where the older characters get to have as much fun—or more—than their younger counterparts. But this piece is also much more than frolicking fun. It also plays with generational differences and the way those differences are revealed in issues of environmentalism, economics, sexuality, and “good morals.” Lauren Taylor is the perfect director—with her big heart, sense of humour, and fine attention to detail—to bring a new production to life!”

Director Lauren Taylor adds, “I am super excited to be working on this hilarious Canadian play about bee keeping, farming, family, and new beginnings with this incredible cast of well-loved actors. I think this will definitely appeal to the urban beekeeper in your life, anyone who’s been on a farm, or anyone looking for a belly laugh this fall! The design team working on the show are already in stitches just planning for the production, especially as it involves having to research sex music!”

“Warm-hearted and sweet, offering genuine belly laughs”Winnipeg Free Press
