Enchantment awaits at CINDERELLA! A Traditional British Pantomime
Returning in its 39th iteration, Metro Theatre’s yearly panto shines a bright lighton community theatre in Vancouver.
Metro Theatre’s beloved holiday tradition returns with a twist, marking our 39th year of magic, merriment, and the joy of panto with Cinderella! A Traditional British Pantomime. Join us for an uproarious journey that mixes festive fun with whimsical storytelling for a one-of-a-kind, family-friendly Christmas event. Bringing together young artists and seasoned professionals, this panto offers a stage for both the legacy and future of community theatre in Vancouver, in a production that is sure to enchant young and old.
After the resounding success of last year’s Sinbad, the same celebrated creative team brings their talent, heart, and hilarity to the stage once more. Written and directed by the acclaimed Shel Piercy, with choreography by Shelley Stewart Hunt and music direction by Arielle Ballance, Cinderella promises thrilling musical numbers, dance routines, laugh-out-loud moments, and plenty of audience engagement. Expect wild chases, wonderful costumes, toe-tapping tunes, and maybe even a chance to boo the “baddie” and cheer the Fairy Godmother on as we watch our beloved heroine’s story unfold - this year, the magic is in the shoes… Not forgetting of course, the iconic Metro take on the 12 Days of Christmas!
Pantomime has been a cherished part of holiday celebrations for generations across the UK and beyond, blending comedy, song, and fairytales into an unforgettable experience for the whole family. First introduced to Metro Theatre in 1985 with Babes in the Magic Wood, this festive tradition has thrived under the guidance of talented directors and writers. The legacy of Metro’s panto continues to bring Vancouver audiences a much-needed dose of lighthearted holiday cheer.
As Piercy says “I’ve directed and produced both theatre and film all my life and yet, the magic of panto remains a mystery - a delicious mystery! Like a chocolate-covered Christmas confection, it's always a thrill to discover the hidden flavour. A flavour that, when revealed on the first bite, proves to be completely wonderful! And that’s panto – something completely wonderful and more than a little surprising!”
Despite the challenges that many theatres have faced since the pandemic, Metro Theatre’s Panto has been a wonderful success story. Each pantomime since 2021 has been larger than the last and we expect the beloved tale of Cinderella to be our biggest show yet. Audiences of all ages are able to connect to this story, and as Metro continues to rebuild from the pandemic, our panto shines a bright light on the future of community theatre in Vancouver.
For over six decades, Metro Theatre has been a vibrant part of Vancouver’s arts community, and the heartbeat of performing arts in Marpole. It is a space where emerging and seasoned artists come together to create theatre. Our large and dedicated group of season patrons return year after year for that special Metro Theatre experience. At Metro Theatre we believe in creating a great night out, and so from the moment a patron walks in the door they are part of our community. We have a fully functioning, and recently refurbished, lounge which is a perfect spot for an intermission drink. As a nurturing ground for artistic talent, Metro Theatre continues to uphold its legacy of dedication to the art of live theatre.
