Metro Theatre Reimagines Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as a Glittery 1970s Variety Show
As Metro’s first full-scale musical in over a decade, this vibrant new production - with a fresh take, stereotype-defying lead, and powerhouse creative team - is poised to be a highlight of the spring theatre season.
Metro Theatre is thrilled to present Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the beloved musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Running May 9 to June 8, 2025, a playful new version that trades Biblical Egypt for the glittering lights of a 1970s TV soundstage - and puts Vancouver’s emerging musical theatre talent in the spotlight. This high-energy, disco-inspired production celebrates inclusivity, community, and classic musical theatre fun.
Taking on the title role is CBC Music Searchlight Top 10 finalist Argel Monte de Ramos. A self-described “Filipino and plus-size artist,” de Ramos brings his perspective to this iconic role: “my artistry is rooted in my advocacy for anti-racism work, inclusion, mental health and representation.” He goes on to say, “I am representing communities that have experienced and [are] experiencing marginalization, and I would like to uplift those communities through my work as an artist.” He hopes that his performance as Joseph can be a “vessel [...] to inspire others,” who rarely, if ever, see themselves represented in the leading roles of musical theatre.
Metro brings a new twist on this classic story, with an inventive take by director Christopher King, choreographed by Shelley Stewart Hunt, with music direction by Jenaya Barker. In this production the character of the Narrator (Ivania Delgado) is transformed into the Cher-inspired host of her very own variety show. On the Vancouver stop of her world tour, she is joined by Joseph, a special guest star with an inspiring story to tell. Within this playful new interpretation are the show’s universal themes of perseverance, forgiveness, and self-belief, all of which feel as timely as ever, and are brought to vivid life by a 17-person cast, live band, and a Day-Glo style that invites pure joy.
First performed at a London preparatory school in 1968 as a 22-minute “pop cantata,” Joseph was expanded into a full-length musical and premiered on the West End in 1973. It has since become one of the most widely produced musicals in the world, appealing to all ages with its genre-hopping score and uplifting message. Audiences can expect all the iconic earworms and infectious energy that have made Joseph a perennial favourite - from “Go GoGo Joseph” to “Any Dream Will Do.”
