PHT’s beloved Baking Time returns this holiday season tofeed imaginations with the simple magic of baking

It's a recipe for pure joy – with live music and puppets!

Imaginations and ingredients run wild in Baking Time, returning this December to Presentation House Theatre (PHT) for its seventh delectable outing. Filled with multi-sensory magic for the young at heart, live music and baking, puppets, and plenty of opportunities for the audience to safely join in on the fun.

As the delightful scent of freshly baked bread wafts through the air, master bakers Bun and Bap find themselves in a sticky situation. They've accidentally over-yeasted a lively batch of dough and it’s growing! When Yeasty Beasty, the dough's monstrous creation, rises and starts chasing the newly baked baby Loafy through forests, oceans, and floury snowstorms, Bun and Bap leap into action.

This culinary collaboration between Presentation House Theatre and UK-based Oily Cart Theatre began with the original Baking Time in 2002. "At its source, it is a sensory experience. We began with the idea of smelling fresh baked bread in a theatre. Add puppetry, music, and Tim Webb's unique sense of humour, and you get Baking Time!" shares Kim Selody, PHT Artistic Director. The creation period in London, England was inspiring and challenging. Working with Oily Cart designer, Claire du Loon, they tested out a series of games and stories with very young children, seeing how little ones responded to the ideas and experiences.

The music, written by Max Reinhardt, was integrated as a storytelling device. Much of this culinary journey is conveyed through song, featuring live cello and accordion to accompany the singing.

This popular production has toured international throughout England and appeared in children's festivals across Canada. Baking Time received the 2017 Jessie Richardson Award for Significant Artistic Achievement – Theatre for Young Audiences, and the 2004 Dora Award for Outstanding TYA Production.

Baking Time is co-produced by PHT and Oily Cart Theatre, written by Tim Webb and Kim Selody, directed by Kim Selody, and featuring performances by Patti Allan and Manami Hara. For ages 3-7 and their favourite grown-ups!

It’s a recipe for pure joy! Baking Time is on at Presentation House Theatre from December 1 – 17, 2023. Tickets are on sale at phtheatre.org/box-office/ or 604-990-3474. For more information and show details, please visit www.phtheatre.org/
