Presentation House Theatre and Elsinor Present a Unique Adaptation of A Christmas Carol: Celebrating Music, Community and Storytelling

Celebrate the holiday season with this unique adaptation of a beloved Christmas classic! Presentation House Theatre (PHT) in partnership with Italy’s Elsinor Centro di ProduzioneTeatrale are proud to present A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens’ beloved story of compassion and redemption. Adapted and created by Giuditta Mingucci, Artistic Co-Director of Elsinor, this rendition of the timeless tale comes to life in an atmospheric and scenic one-woman reading, where community voices blend together with an award-winning live jazz ensemble of high school students.

In this staged adaptation, the role of Ebenezer Scrooge is played by Leslie Dos Remedios, who journeys through Scrooge’s night of self-reflection and transformation, guided by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. This is heightened by the recorded voices of North Shore community members playing the other characters, and live jazz accompaniment from Sentinel Secondary School’s Jazz A Band, a group that has earned a Gold award at the Whistler Con Brio Jazz Festival last year.

A Christmas Carol, often remembered for its holiday warmth and Scrooge’s redemption, was written to raise awareness about the serious social issues of the time, such as poverty, the inhumane conditions in factories, and the indifference of the upper classes toward the struggles of others. It served as a kind of ‘manifesto’ against social injustice, aiming to inspire reflection and concrete change—and indeed helped to bring about that change,” shares Mingucci, “Bringing this piece to life with the PHT community is a deeply meaningful experience; the live music, performed by students from Sentinel Secondary in West Van, and the voices of local talent lend a vibrant, collective energy to the work. This collaboration celebrates our shared humanity and highlights the power of storytelling to inspire compassion and unity.”

Sentinel's Jazz A Band, music directed by educator Zoltan Virag, brings a fresh musical interpretation to this iconic story. "This ensemble is used to putting on concerts where they take center stage as the feature ensemble. In this production, however, the student musicians are learning how to be an accompaniment to the drama that is the focus on stage," explains Virag. "This is both a creative and collaborative process, and I am thrilled for the students to perform and for the audience to witness how we bring this classic tale alive with a new and novel interpretation."

Since its first publication, A Christmas Carol has enjoyed overwhelming success and countless adaptations, including public readings by Dickens himself. This adaptation offers an experience that merges music, community, and storytelling to capture the essence of Dickens’ message and the holiday spirit.
