Me & The Forest: A Larger-Than-Life Outdoor Theatre Adventure Comes to Granville Island

Vancouver’s award-winning Boca del Lupo makes first return to outdoor stage since pandemic, partners with Korean puppet masters for 5+ metre-tall spectacle.

Ever wanted to speak to a tree? Me & The Forest, the latest performance from award-winning experiential theatre company Boca del Lupo, invites audiences young and old to connect with nature like never before. The outdoor co-production, with master puppeteers from Korea’s ArtstageSAN, makes its North American debut with 15 shows, starting at the Vancouver International Children’s Festival from May 29.

Join a cast of woodland spirits as they explore the humour and wisdom of the forest in this interactive adventure for all ages! Crafted in collaboration with ArtstageSAN (hosts of the Chuncheon World Puppet Festival), Me & The Forest presents larger-than-life puppets, including a 5-metre-tall West Coast conifer named Mitig and his little sidekick Sol, in an exploration of humanity's relationship to the natural world. Immersive audio, delivered via individual wireless headphones, draws audience members into direct conversation with nature, allowing them to listen in on the musings, jokes and stories of the ancient tree-like beings.

The one-of-a-kind show marks Boca del Lupo’s much-anticipated return to outdoor stages, the first in over a decade. The project was conceptualized by Boca del Lupo Co-Artistic Directors Sherry J Yoon (Siminovitch Prize Finalist) and Jay Dodge (multiple Jesse Richardson Theatre Award-winning designer) and created alongside Ji Yun and Hyun San, founders of ArtstageSAN. And they’re in good company, with a script by renowned Algonquin playwright Yvette Nolan, music by Pietro Amato (Arcade Fire collaborator) and a starring vocal performance from Hiro Kanagawa (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star Trek: Discovery, The X-Files).

Founded in 1996, Boca del Lupo made a name for itself throughout the 2000s and 2010s with its Outdoor Roving Spectaculars, amassing several theatre awards including the Critics’ Choice Award for Innovation. The Last Stand (2002) and Vasily the Luckless (2005) saw performers rigged up in the trees of Stanley Park, La Marea (2011) took over an entire block in Gastown, Quasimodo (2008) was performed under the Burrard Street Bridge with actors scaling its structure, and Fall Away Home (2013) returned to Stanley Park with a technological, screen-projected twist. Me & The Forest is the latest in Boca’s trailblazing tradition of outdoor performances in unconventional spaces, this time at the water’s edge of Granville Island.

New! Initially taking place over just three days at the Vancouver International Children’s Festival, Me & The Forest is receiving an extended run, now with an additional 10 shows up to June 14th.

The extended run of Me & The Forest is made possible through the generous support of RBC, Boughton Law, CMHC Granville Island and the many individual donors who value accessible, local, live performance.

Tickets are available at showpass.com/me-the-forest from only $15.
