“The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.”

How do we build a peaceful society when the political arena has become a warzone? The Roman Republic: A nation divided by civil unrest reunites under the rule of a new leader, the victorious General, Julius Caesar. While citizens rejoice, whispers of dissent echo through the Senate. Having proclaimed himself Dictator for Life and on the verge of being crowned King, some fear Caesar’s rising popularity and unchecked power threatens the very foundation upon which the Republic was built. A conspiracy forms, loyalties fall, and one of history’s most famous betrayals sends a would-be empire into chaos.

Far From The Tree Productions is thrilled to present this fast paced and gritty take on Shakespeare’s immortal historical tragedy. Set in a world, not unlike our own, this production aestheticizes a “timeless now” through which the war of politics and the politicization of war become all too familiar. This ancient tale reaches through time from antiquity, to Shakespeare’s day, to our modern era, reflecting upon the cyclical nature of violence, the instability of power, and the corrupting potential of both ambition and idealism, especially when the two are confused for one another.

This particular production harkens back to historic practice, making use of an Actor Director to lead the ensemble. The compact cast of 12 works tirelessly to bring legions to life, while inviting audiences into the intimate moments. “I'm so so excited about the range of dynamics in the play,” says Assistant Director, Garvin Chan, “how sweet, weird, and funny this show is, even when put up against a world of unease and violence that is becoming increasingly familiar.” “Violence begets more violence,” shares Ensemble Member Joelle Wyminga, “and Julius Caesar shows this cycle expertly. I love that there is no perfect good or bad in JC. Everyone has their motives…You cannot have war without politics. So maybe it’s time for us to start to understand both a little better"

“There is a tide in the affairs of men/ Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;/ Omitted, all the voyage of their life /Is bound in shallows and in miseries.” -Brutus, Act IV, Scene iii

“Cowards die many times before their deaths;/ The valiant never taste of death but once./ Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, /It seems to me most strange that men should fear;/ Seeing that death, a necessary end,/ Will come when it will come.” -Julius Caesar, Act II, Scene ii

“Men at some time are masters of their fates. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.” -Cassius, Act I, Scene ii

“O judgement! thou art fled to brutish beasts,/ And men have lost their reason….” – Mark Antony, Act III, Scene ii
