Unsex Me Here Rewrites the Story of Lady Macbeth with a Modern Twist

With her play, Unsex Me Here @Lady M, actor and lawyer Keri Bennett brings a bold, contemporary and darkly comic perspective to one of Shakespeare’s most compelling characters - Lady Macbeth.

While Lady Macbeth has long been seen as a complex, often vilified, female figure, Bennett challenges the traditional narrative of her descent into madness and situates the character within the pressures and realities of modern life.

The play, Unsex Me Here @Lady M, examines the forces shaping women’s decisions today, including reproductive health, fertility, religion, ambition, power, public identity in the digital age, and the complexities of love and loss.

Drawing on her experience in the high-pressure world of private legal practice, Bennett highlights ongoing tensions within professional culture. “There is now more dialogue around mental health and inclusion in the legal profession,” says Bennett, “but clients still expect confidence and control. Vulnerability does not inspire trust. Success in private practice remains rooted in a powerful, polished image.”

Directed by Maryth Gilroy and Karen Hamm, the production addresses the often invisible challenges faced by women dealing with reproductive health issues. Many conditions go undiagnosed for years, and even after diagnosis, treatments may be inadequate or carry significant side effects. These realities—along with chronic pain and infertility—stand in stark contrast to the “glossy” professional image many women feel compelled to maintain.

Bennett also explores how highly capable women can make choices that undermine their potential, shaped by both internal and external pressures. The character of Lady M is further informed by a departure from a traditional Mormon upbringing, reflecting how early belief systems can continue to influence identity and decision-making long after they are left behind.

Unsex Me Here @Lady M merges film and live performance, a pointed commentary on our parasocial relationship with influencer culture and digital connectedness. Bennett, as Lady M, is the solo live performer, interacting with the filmed performances of her six castmates.

With Unsex Me Here @Lady M, Bennett invites audiences to reconsider Lady Macbeth through the lens of contemporary society.
