Growing Up Gets Complicated: Metro Theatre Opens 64th Season withAvenue Q
The Tony Award-winning musical comedy brings puppets, problems, and plenty of adult humour to Vancouver September 18 through October 10, 2026
Metro Theatre opens its 64th season with Avenue Q, the irreverent Tony Award-winning musical comedy about adulthood, relationships, and the uncomfortable realization that nobody really has it all figured out. Running September 18 (preview) through October 10, 2026, and directed by Christopher King, this bold and hilarious production brings humans and puppets together to take on the messy realities of finding your way in the world.
Fresh out of college with a degree and plenty of optimism, Princeton arrives in New York City ready to discover his purpose. What he finds instead is Avenue Q — a rundown neighbourhood populated by an eclectic group of characters navigating careers, relationships, money, identity, and uncertain futures.
As Princeton searches for direction, he quickly discovers that life after college looks very different from what he imagined. Alongside his new neighbours, including aspiring teacher Kate Monster, roommates Rod and Nicky, therapist Christmas Eve, and internet enthusiast Trekkie Monster, Princeton learns that finding your purpose may be less about having all the answers and more about figuring things out as you go.
Winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical, Avenue Q became a Broadway phenomenon by pairing the familiar style of children’s educational television with a decidedly adult perspective. More than two decades after its debut, its sharp humour and witty score remain strikingly relatable, finding comedy in the expectations placed on adulthood and what happens when reality doesn’t quite live up to them.
Metro Theatre’s production brings the colourful residents of Avenue Q to life through the show’s signature combination of puppetry, comedy, music, and heart. The ensemble cast features Richard Lloyd White as Princeton and Rod, Leah Dubbin-Steckel as Kate Monster and Lucy, Liam Reitsma as Trekkie Monster, Nicky and a Bad Idea Bear, Britney Mocca as Gary Coleman, Jaclyn Sim as Christmas Eve, Zak Stevens as Brian, and Rachel Scheibel as Mrs. T and a Bad Idea Bear. Together, the company captures the fast-paced comedy, musical energy, and unexpected heart that have made Avenue Q an enduring audience favourite.
Outrageous, endearing, and unapologetically adult, Avenue Q kicks off Metro Theatre’s new season with a hilariously honest reminder that life may not turn out exactly as planned — and maybe that’s okay.
Avenue Q contains strong language, mature themes, sexual content, and explicit humour and is intended for adult audiences.
