Christmas Comes Early: Metro Theatre Brings Holiday Hilarity to the Stage with Nuncrackers
The holiday sequel to the beloved musical comedy Nunsense brings festive mischief and plenty of laughs to Vancouver, October 23 through November 14, 2026
Christmas is coming early to Metro Theatre with Nuncrackers, the hilarious holiday sequel to the beloved musical comedy Nunsense. Running October 23 through November 14, 2026, and directed by Jennifer Suratos, who also reprises her role as Mother Superior, this spirited production reunites audiences with the Little Sisters of Hoboken as they prepare to put on a Christmas spectacular unlike any other.
The sisters have big plans for the holidays. Having transformed the basement of their convent into a makeshift television studio, they're ready to broadcast their very own Christmas special, complete with festive songs, lively performances, and a few surprises along the way. With the cameras ready to roll and the holiday spirit in full swing, everything seems to be falling into place. At least, that's the plan.
As the festivities get underway, the sisters soon discover that producing a television special is easier said than done. Between unpredictable performances, backstage mishaps, and the occasional disagreement, their carefully planned celebration quickly gives way to delightful chaos. What unfolds is an unconventional Christmas variety show filled with musical numbers, outrageous antics, and the kind of good-natured mischief that only the Little Sisters of Hoboken could deliver.
Written by Dan Goggin, Nuncrackers continues the story of the eccentric congregation first introduced in Nunsense, the international musical comedy hit that became an enduring favourite of community and professional theatres alike. Since its debut, Nunsense has delighted audiences with its irreverent humour, memorable characters, and affectionate portrayal of convent life. Its holiday sequel builds on that legacy, blending the familiar charm of a traditional Christmas special with the quick wit and playful absurdity that have defined the series for decades.
At the helm of Metro Theatre's production is Jennifer Suratos, leading a cast that includes Mary Cleaver as the outspoken Sister Robert Anne, Paula Higgins as Sister Mary Hubert, Keri Smith as the forgetful Sister Amnesia, and Vincent Keats as Father Virgil. With choreography by Shelley Stewart Hunt and music direction by Carlina Dykstra, the company brings together the spirited performances, lively music, and comedic energy at the heart of Nuncrackers.
Beyond the musical mayhem, Nuncrackers finds warmth in the unlikely family at the centre of its story. For all their disagreements and occasional disasters, the sisters share an unmistakable sense of community, reminding audiences that the holidays are as much about the people we celebrate with as the traditions themselves. It's this balance of irreverent comedy and genuine affection that gives the show its enduring appeal.
Full of humour, heart, and holiday spirit, Nuncrackers invites audiences to celebrate the season a little early with a joyfully unconventional Christmas special where even the best-laid plans can go hilariously wrong.
