YUPI! LATIN AMERICAN ARTS FAMILY FESTIVAL BRINGS THREE DAYS OF CULTURE AND JOY TO NORTH VANCOUVER
First-of-its-kind Lower Mainland festival invites children and families to celebrate, connect, and experience Latin American culture.
This October 16–18, Neworld Theatre, in partnership with Presentation House Theatre, the Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre, and La Libélula, launches Yupi! Latin American Arts Family Festival at Presentation House Theatre. Yupi! is the Lower Mainland’s first dedicated festival celebrating Latin American arts, languages, and traditions for children ages 3–12 and their families.
Meaning excitement or a joyful “yay!”, Yupi! offers a weekend of performances, hands-on workshops, music, dance, puppetry, and food. Programming takes place in English, Español, and Português, welcoming families of all backgrounds.
“Becoming a mother as an immigrant awakened my desire to reconnect with my culture,” says co-curator Fiorella Pinillos.“Yupi! is an invitation for families to share our culture not only among ourselves, but also with friends, neighbours, and the broader community.”
The lineup features performances by MNGWA, Capoeira Aché Brasil, Alma Raiz, Canto Vivo Choir, Muévete Marimbas, and Nahualli Folklore, alongside free hands-on workshops in percussion, dance, storytelling, and crafts. Other weekend activities include face painting, Lotería (Mexican bingo), silk screening, and the world premiere of Neworld Theatre’s puppet show Moonweavings, with a festive Baile de Carnaval dance party to close out the weekend.
“There is nothing else like this in our city for Latin American families and young audiences,” adds co-curator Daniela Atiencia. “It creates a rare space where children can see their joy reflected on stage while sharing our creativity with the wider Canadian community.”
All activities are beginner-friendly, and Presentation House Theatre is wheelchair accessible.
